All parents know that the early years before children go off to school are vital in a child’s life.
Parents have a key role in creating a secure childhood for their children. It’s just that sometimes they may need a bit of help – YOUR help.
As a volunteer, what would I actually do?
Usually you visit a family in their own home for 2-3 hours per week. The support offered is flexible and responds to the needs of the individual family. Some might need someone to talk to and others may need for example, help in getting to appointments, playing with the children or finding out about local services.
Is there any training involved?
All volunteers attend a Preparation Course which runs over a number of sessions, usually between 6 and 9 depending on numbers. We give high priority to ongoing training and support for volunteers and offer support and supervision sessions every 8 weeks.
All volunteers must also undergo an enhanced PVG check and provide the names of two suitable referees.
Do I have to have any particular qualifications?
No, we only ask that you are a parent yourself or have experience of bringing up children. Your life experience and knowledge of family life are the most important qualities you bring to the role of a volunteer.
Are there any other ways to get involved?
We are always interested in meeting people who might consider becoming a Trustee on the Board. Home-Start Garioch is a charity Limited by Guarantee and is governed by a committed Board of Trustees.
